Find and save archived copies of a page

5 tools. 4 run with ot in a sandbox on Windows, macOS and Linux; 1 with otlite on Linux and macOS, no Docker. Compare them side by side ↓

The Wayback Machine has captured most public pages many times, so you can see what a page said before it changed or disappeared, and when. These tools list a URL's captures, find the oldest and newest, recover every path a site once listed in robots.txt, and ask the archive to capture a page now, so your evidence has an independent, dated copy.

With ot, in a sandbox

Windows, macOS and Linux, with Docker or Podman. Each tool runs in a read-only container that can reach only the sites it declares, and every result comes back in the same JSON shape.

Without Docker, with otlite

Linux and macOS. otlite installs each one with pip or git into its own virtualenv, pinned to a version it has tested: otlite install auto-archiver.

How to find and save archived copies of a page

  1. List the captures of the URL (waybackpack), or jump to the oldest and newest (waybackpy).
  2. Compare the captures around the date that matters to you to see what changed.
  3. Capture the page as it is now (savepagenow) and keep the archive's address with your notes.

Every registry tool here runs on your machine in a sandbox, and ot auto url:… runs all the installed ones on one value.

Before you run one

Does saving a page contact the site?

Yes, indirectly: the Wayback Machine fetches the page from its own servers, so the site sees a request from the archive, not from you. Listing existing captures only reads the archive.

Why is a page missing from the archive?

Sites can exclude themselves, pages behind logins or heavy scripts are often captured empty, and some pages were never crawled. Common Crawl and the other archives on the domain page sometimes have what the Wayback Machine lacks.

Do these tools send my search anywhere?

No. ot runs each tool on your own machine in a read-only container that can only reach the sites the tool declares, and results stay in your results folder. The registry only counts installs.

Do I need an API key?

Most tools here work without one; the row says "Key required" when one is needed, and ot keys set stores it in your OS keychain so only that tool's container sees it.
